Sri Lanka registered their fifth consecutive win against England in World Cup

Sri Lanka registered a comfortable 8-wicket win over defending champions England in the 25th match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first.

After winning the toss, England were off to a flying start and made a 45-run partnership for the first wicket. However, after the dismissal of Dawid Malan for 28 runs, England lost momentum, and Sri Lanka came back into the game strongly. Sri Lankan bowlers kept things tight and put pressure back on England. England lost wickets at regular intervals, and no one got going. Ben Stokes was the top scorer with 43 runs, and Jonny Bairstow scored 30 runs. For Sri Lanka, Lahiru Kumara claimed 3 wickets, while Angelo Mathews and Kasun Rajitha chipped in with 2 wickets.

In reply to that, Sri Lanka chased down the target successfully and scored 160 runs for a loss of 2 wickets in 25.4 overs. Sri Lanka is off to a shaky start, having lost two wickets cheaply. However, after that, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Pathum Nissanka made an unbroken 137-run partnership for the third wicket and guided the team to a victory. Pathum Nissanka was the top scorer with an unbeaten 77 runs, and Sadeera Samarawickrama was well supported with an unbeaten 65 runs.

With that win, Sri Lanka moved up to 5th place in the point table with 4 points.
