Matheesha Pathirana, a 20-year-old Sri Lankan pacer who played for the Chennai Super Kings, had an outstanding start in the Indian Premier League. He played 12 matches and took 19 wickets. He grabbed 18 wickets in the final overs of the innings, which is when he bowled the most of his overs. Matheesha Pathirana was a front-runner for Emerging Player of the Year in this year’s Indian Premier League.
The Chennai Super Kings won the final by five wickets against the Gujarat Titans. With that win, Matheesha Pathirana became the youngest overseas player to win the IPL title. At the end of the final, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming expressed his thoughts on Matheesha Pathirana. “He’s (Pathirana) been massive. We have been a little bit short in the bowling department, so Tushar fronted up. With Pathirana, the backend all of a sudden became a weapon for us.” Fleming siad.
