Kandy start the IPL campaign with a win
The defending champion Kandy team registered a 6 wicket win over Dambulla in the opening match of the Lanka Premier League, 2024, at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Kandy Team captain Wanindu Hasaranga won the toss and elected to bowl first.
After winning the toss, the Dambulla Sixers were off to a sheaky start, and they lost 4 early wickets. After that, Mark Chapman and Chamindu Wickramasinghe made an unbroken 154-run partnership for the 5th wicket. It helped the Dambulla Sixers score 179 runs for a loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. Youngster Chamindu Wickramasinghe scored an unbeaten 62 runs, and Mark Chapman scored 91 runs not out. For Kandy Falcons, Dasun Shanaka claimed 3 wickets.
In reply to that, the Kandy Falcons chased down the target successfully and scored 183 runs for a loss of 4 wickets in 17.2 overs. Dinesh Chandimal was the top scorer with 65 runs in 40 balls. At the back end of the innings, Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shanaka made an unbroken 72-run partnership for the 5th wicket. Angelo Mathews scored an unbeaten 37 runs, while Dasun Shanaka smashed an unbeaten 46 runs in 15 balls.
