Matthews has played six Test matches in New Zealand and scored 503 runs with one hundred and four half centuries. He has a healthy batting average of 55.88 in New Zealand. Matthews played a gem of an inning with Kusal Mendis and made an unbroken 274 runs when Sri Lanka toured New Zealand last time. Both batted through the fourth day and added 239 runs for the fourth wicket. That partnership helped Sri Lanka draw the first Test of the two-match Test series against New Zealand.
