What was Dasun Shanaka done to Sri Lanka cricket?
The newly appointed Sri Lankan selection committee officially named Wanindu Hasaranga and Kusal Mendis as the T20I and ODI captains, respectively. With that decision, Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka lost his captain position in limited format.
Dasun Shanaka was appointed as the captain of Sri Lanka’s T20I side in September 2019 for the first time during the T20I series against Pakistan in Pakistan. Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka won all three T20Is against number-one-ranked Pakistan, which was Sri Lanka’s first T20I series whitewash and Pakistan’s first whitewash loss. Dasun Shanaka captained Sri Lanka in the 2022 Asia Cup, and they clinched the title under his captaincy.
In June 2021, Dasun Shanaka was appointed as the captain of the Sri Lanka ODI side. Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka became the champions of the World Cup Qualifier after failing to directly qualify for the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Sri Lanka won all eight matches in the tournament.
Dasun Shanaka captained the side for 41 ODI matches and won 23 matches, including 13 consecutive wins. Also, Shanaka led the side in 48 T20I matches and won 23 matches.
