Upul Tharanga is the second after Ricky Ponting
Do you know that former Sri Lankan captain and opening batsman Upul Tharanga was involved in seven 200+ run partnerships in ODI matches. He is the second batsman in the world to do so after Australian legend Ricky Ponting.
Upul Tharanga made his ODI debut in 2005, and he played 235 ODI matches and scored 6,951 runs with 15 hundreds. In 2006, Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya made a 286-run partnership for the first wicket against England at Leeds. It was the first time he had more than 200 partnerships in an ODI match.It recored as the highest first-wicket partnership until Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman broke that record in 2018 with 304 runs against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo.
Following that, Upul Tharanga was involved in seven 200-plus partnership ODIs. He made a 200+ run first-wicket partnership with Mahela Jayawardene in three instances and with Sanath Jayasuriya and TM Dilshan in two instances each.
