July 29: Mahela and Sanga record breaking partnership
On This Day in 2006, former Sri Lankan captain and legendary batsman Mahela Jayawardene scored his highest score in Test matches. He scored 374 runs against South Africa at the SSC in Colombo. He faced 572 balls and stayed at the crease for 752 minutes, which took almost 13 hours. Mahela’s 374 runs are recorded as the highest Individual score by a Sri Lankan cricketer in Test matches. Previously, Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya held the record with 340 runs against India in 1997.
On This Day in 2006, Sri Lankan legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene made the highest partnership for any wicket in Test matches. Both Sangakkara and Jayawardene shared a 624-run partnership for the 3rd wicket against South Africa at the SSC in Colombo. For that mamuth partnership, Mahela Jayawardene contributed 309 runs, while Kumar Sangakkara contributed 285 runs. Both faced 950 balls to build this record partnership.
On This Day in 2021, Sri Lankan super-star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga achieved his best bowling figures in T20I matches. He claimed four wickets for nine runs in his four-over spell against India at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
