Dimuth Karunarathne eqaul with Muttiah Muralitharan

Sri Lankan former Test captain Dimuth Karunarathne was included in the recently announced ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year 2023. This is the third time that he has been named Test Team of the Year. Previously, Dimuth Karunarathne was named the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year in 2018 and 2021. 

With that, Dimuth Karunarathne became the third Sri Lankan to be a member of the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year on three occasions or more, after greats Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakkara.

Since the ICC announced the Test Team of the Year in 2004, some big names in Sri Lankan cricket have been included in the team. Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara was included in the ICC Test Team on seven occasions and he was named the captain of the team in 2011. Also, Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was named the captain of the Test Team of the year 2014.

In 2008, three Sri Lankan players were included in the Test Team of the Year. Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara, and Muttiah Muralitharan were included in the team for their individual performances during the year 2008.
