Sri Lankan Captain Aravinda de Silva won the toss and invited Zimbabwe to bat first. Zimbabwe scored 312 runs for lost of 4 wickets. Zimbabwean batsman Andy Flower scored unbeaten 115 runs on his ODI debut. Andy Waller made 83 runs not out in just 45 balls.
In reply that Sri Lanka chased down it successfully with 4 balls remaining. Roshan Mahanama and Athula Samarasekara made 128 runs partnership for the 1st wicket. For Sri Lanka, it was Arjuna Ranatunga, who was the top scorer with unbeaten 88 runs in 61 balls. Eventually Sri Lanka manage to score 313 runs for lost of 7 wickets in 49.2 overs
