Sri Lankans who retired too early

In the last 3 to 4 years, some Sri Lankan players announced their retirement from international cricket when they were in their early 30s. Most of them came in with big potential, and some of them have led the Sri Lanka national Team as well. But some of them leave the game too early.

Here are some Sri Lankans who retired early.

Chamara Kapugedara (2006–2019)

Sri Lankan middle-order batsman Chamara Kapugedara announced his retirement from international cricket in 2019, when he was 32 years old. He made his international debut in 2006, and since then he has appeared in 8 Test matches, 102 ODI matches, and 43 T20I matches. Kapugedara was appointed vice captain of the ODI squad for the series against India in late July 2017. In the second ODI, Tharanga has been suspended for two ODIs due to a slow overrate. With that, Kapugedera was appointed captain. His last international fixture was against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2017.

Thisara Perera (2009–2021)

Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera announced his retirement from international cricket in 2021, when he was 32 years old. Thisara Perera made his debut in 2009 and played six Tests, 166 ODI matches, and 84 T20I matches. He has scored 2338 runs and taken 175 wickets in ODI matches. Also, He scored 1204 runs and claimed 51 wickets in T20Is. In 2017, he was named captain of the Sri Lanka team’s series against Pakistan.

Isuru Udana (2009–2021)

Sri Lankan all-rounder Isuru Udana announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket in 2021, when he was 33 years old. Isuru Udana made his International debut in 2009. He was well known as a limited overs specialist, and he has played 21 ODI matches and 35 T20I matches.

Lahiru Thirimanne (2009–2023)

Sri Lankan left-handed batsman Lahiru Thirimanne announced his retirement from international cricket when he was 33 years old. Thirimanne played 44 Tests, 127 ODIs, and 26 T20Is for Sri Lanka and scored 2088 Test runs, 3194 ODI runs, and 291 runs in T20Is. He has seven hundred across formats. He played Three formats for Sri Lanka. Later, he was considered for the test format. Thirimanne’s last international fixture was against India in Bengaluru in 2022.
