A historic victory for Bangladesh against New Zealand
Bangladesh registered a 150-run win over New Zealand in the first Test of the series on Saturday at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh made 310 runs in their first inning. Mahmudul Hasan Joy was the top scorer with the bat and scored 86 runs, while Mominul Haque and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 37 runs each. Wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan scored 29 runs. For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips claimed 4 wickets, while Ajaz Patel and Kyle Jamieson chipped in with 2 wickets.
In reply to that, New Zealand scored 317 runs in their first inning. Kane Williamson made his 29th Test hundred and scored 104 runs. Glenn Phillips scored 42 runs, and Daryl Mitchell scored 41 runs. While in the bowling department, Taijul Islam claimed 4 wickets and Mominul Haque took 3 wickets.
Bangladesh start their second inning with 7 runs behind, and they manage to score 338 runs for their second inning. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was the star with the bat and scored 105 runs, and Mushfiqur Rahim scored 67 runs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz made an unbeaten 50 runs. For New Zealand, Ajaz Patel claimed four wickets.
Bangladesh set the 332-run target to chase visitors. However, New Zealand bowled out 181 runs. Daryl Mitchell was the top scorer with 58 runs, and Tim Southee scored 34 runs. Ish Sodhi and Devon Conway scored 22 runs each. Taijul Islam destroyed New Zealand’s innings and claimed six wickets.
This win marked Bangladesh’s first win against New Zealand on home soil. With that win, Bangladesh led the series, and they moved to second place in the ICC World Test Championship point table.
