February 23: Sri Lanka registered World record chase

On this day in 1992, Sri Lanka became the first team to chase a 300+ score successfully in ODI matches. It happened during the World Cup match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at New Plymouth. Zimbabwe scored 312 runs for a loss of 4 wickets in their 50 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka chased it down successfully with 4 balls remaining and scored 313 runs for a loss of 7 wickets.

On this day in 1992, Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya made his debut in World Cup matches. Since then, he has played five World Cup tournaments: 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, and 2007.

On this day in 2019, Sri Lanka became the first Asian team to win a Test series in South Africa. Sri Lanka registered a 2-0 series win against South Africa. Sri Lanka won the first match by 1 wicket, and Sri Lanka won the second match by 8 wickets.

On this day in 2021, Sri Lankan opening batter Upul Tharanga announced his retirement from international cricket.
